What to Know When Shopping for a Security Door

Hello, my name is Harold. I am quite new to using the internet. My granddaughter taught me how to use this computer so I decided to start a blog. I didn't have an idea for what I should base my blog on. My wife suggested that I start a home and garden blog. I should make it clear that I am not a home and garden expert so all this advice consists of things I have learnt myself or been taught by others when I have been working on my own property. I hope you enjoy my blog and find it useful.

What to Know When Shopping for a Security Door

If you want to improve the security of your home or business, a security door might be on your mind. Here are some important things you need to know to ensure you purchase a security door that meets your needs:

What Is a Security Door?

Just because a salesperson is referring to a particular door as a security door, it does not mean it is. A high-quality security door should meet the following requirements:

Be heavy and robust in a way that requires it to be lifted by more than two people.

Have passed a pull and jemmy test. A pull test involves applying weights to areas on the door that are commonly attacked by burglars to test how much force they can withstand. A jemmy test involves mimicking a burglar's attempts to break into your premises using a lever.

Meet the Australian standards for a security door. a security door that has met Australian standards is usually branded with numbers that might start with the letters 'AS'. For example, you might see something like AS 5039-2008. These numbers and letters mean that the security door has been tested and found to be of high-quality and burglar-proof.

Design of the Security Doors

This depends on your preference and unique needs. You can get a solid or grilled security door or a security screen door.

Solid security doors — These are security doors that have no spaces. They are entirely solid and might be very heavy. They can either be made from wood or steel.

Grilled security doors — These are security doors made from bars of thick steel. They have spaces between the bars, meaning they might not offer privacy. If you are not going for privacy, this is the security door for you. These spaces can also allow insects to fly in and out of your home or business, so if this is something you might not want, this is not the design for you. The good thing about these spaces, however, is that they enhance the better circulation of fresh air while offering security.

Security screen doors — This is the option you choose if you want privacy, fresh air circulation, to prevent flying insects from entering your home or business and security. A security screen door is a kind of steel mesh combined with steel bars and a steel frame to make it more secure. The mesh has tiny spaces that insects cannot access but can allow air circulation.
