Two tips to follow when decorating a room with stout windows

Hello, my name is Harold. I am quite new to using the internet. My granddaughter taught me how to use this computer so I decided to start a blog. I didn't have an idea for what I should base my blog on. My wife suggested that I start a home and garden blog. I should make it clear that I am not a home and garden expert so all this advice consists of things I have learnt myself or been taught by others when I have been working on my own property. I hope you enjoy my blog and find it useful.

Two tips to follow when decorating a room with stout windows

If you're decorating a room that has very stout windows, here are some tips to follow.

If you want to use blinds, opt for vertical ones

If you prefer blinds to other window dressings, you should consider using vertical window blinds. The reason for this is that blinds with vertical slats or vanes will elongate the stout window's appearance and thus make it appear taller than it really is. This could be particularly useful if the window's shortness is not proportional to the room (i.e., if the room has quite tall ceilings and the window looks far too stout in comparison). In contrast, horizontal Venetian blinds that draw the eye sideways when you look at them will accentuate the window's shortness and disproportionate dimensions and as such, you should avoid using these in this room.

If you order vertical window blinds, you should consider choosing ones whose slats or vanes feature a vertical stripe pattern that will further enhance their ability to give your window an elongated look. When ordering the blinds, make sure that you double-check your window's measurements. If you order vertical blinds that are even slightly too long, the slats or vanes will crumple or tilt to the side and will have the strikingly lengthening effect you're looking for.

Avoid decorating the windowsill or using it for storage

If possible, you should avoid decorating the windowsill with pictures or ornaments, and try to not use it as a storage area in the room. The reason for this is that any decorative objects on the windowsill will obscure some of the window's length and make it appear even shorter. This will counteract the positive elongating effects of the vertical blinds.

If you require storage or want to add more decorative touches to this area of the room, you could put a tall, narrow shelving unit on either side of the window. That way, the tallness and narrow proportions will be in keeping with the tall, narrow look of the vanes or slats of the blinds, and use these to store your items or to put ornaments and pictures.

To draw attention to the new blinds and the positive impact they have on the window's appearance, you might want to pick shelving units in a colour that matches the window dressing so that the units do not distract from the blinds (alternatively, if you choose blinds with a pattern, you could opt for plain coloured shelving units).
